1. PERMISSION TO WORK FOR PEOPLE SEEKING ASYLUM
People who have fled war, torture and persecution do not have permission to work in the UK while they wait for the Home Office to make a decision on their application for asylum. They have no choice but to rely on support from the Home Office.
We are urging the government to get behind more sensible rules for asylum seekers which allow them to work if they’ve been in the UK for more than six months and haven’t had a decision on their case, or if they have been refused asylum but temporarily cannot return to their country of origin.
Contact your MP urging them to sign a declaration which supports asylum seekers being allowed to get jobs to support themselves if they’ve waited more than six months for a decision. It means that asylum seekers won’t be relying on charity to get by. And those who get leave to remain in the UK will find it much easier to become part of British society if they’ve already been given a chance to work.
